FAQ
How I can help as your local MP
What can an MP help with?
MPs can assist with matters that fall under the direct responsibility of central government, including issues related to:
- Benefits, pensions, National Insurance, and other matters dealt with by the Department for Work and Pensions
- Immigration and other problems dealt with by the Home Office
- Tax issues involving HM Revenue and Customs
- Problems with the NHS
- Problems with the Child Maintenance Service or Child Support Agency
- School and closures
Issues with local authority services like waste collection, road maintenance, planning, and school or housing allocation are managed by Charnwood Borough Council and Leicestershire County Council. These should initially be addressed with your local Councillors. However, I am always willing to write to the Council on your behalf, asking them to investigate a problem or reconsider a specific issue.
How do I book an advice session?
I am here to assist with issues that fall under the responsibilities of Parliament or central government. Please note that MPs cannot intervene in private disputes with neighbours or employers, family matters, or issues with faulty goods sold by companies, nor can they influence court decisions.
If you have an issue that you believe I can assist with, please reach out to the constituency office via email at jeevun.sandher.mp@parliament.uk or phone on 01509 351051. We will inform you if we can take on your case, need more details, or recommend scheduling an advice session with me. Currently, these sessions are held via Zoom, but in-person appointments will be offered as soon as possible.
Help regarding housing issues
I understand how challenging and stressful housing issues can be for many constituents. While I don’t have control over local authority housing, social housing, or the private rental market, and I’m not qualified to provide legal housing advice, I can assist in presenting your case to Charnwood Borough Council. Although we can’t demand specific actions or alter decisions, I can help highlight administrative errors. It’s important to note that transparent processes are in place to ensure everyone understands the rules.
The Housing Options Service can provide Charnwood constituents with free advice relating to preventing homelessness and finding accommodation when homeless.

Tours of Parliament
I can arrange tours of Parliament for a small group of constituents throughout the year. Due to scheduling and availability, it’s best to email me in advance so I can explore what options might be possible.
Tours are free of charge and available to UK residents. During the 75-minute tour, an expert guide will:
- Explain the work of UK Parliament and its relevance today
- Outline how the working spaces on the tour are used
- Set out ways constituents can get involved and engage with the democratic process
- Highlight some of the dramatic history of the Palace of Westminster
The visitor tour route includes the chambers of both Houses, the State Rooms in the House of Lords, Central Lobby, St Stephen’s Hall, and Westminster Hall. Please note that when the Houses are in session, the full tour route may not always be accessible and could be subject to last-minute changes or cancellations due to parliamentary business.
Diary enquiries
An MP’s schedule follows a rhythm when Parliament is in session—Monday to Thursday in Westminster, and Friday and Saturday in the constituency, visiting schools, community groups, organisations, businesses, and holding advice sessions. If you’d like to invite me to an event, it’s best to aim for a Friday during the parliamentary year, as other weekdays are typically reserved for Westminster. During recess periods, my schedule is more flexible, but please keep in mind that I receive a large number of invitations each month, making it impossible to attend every event. Additionally, my diary often fills up several weeks or months in advance, so early booking is essential. Please email me with an outline of your event, and we’ll be in touch to discuss how we can assist.
How the local planning process works
MPs do not have any formal role in the planning process.
Those responsible for decisions in the planning process—such as planning officers, councillors, inspectors, and ministers—must adhere to strict procedural rules. These rules ensure that their decisions cannot be influenced by private discussions with anyone outside the formal process.
The government advises that “MPs should not seek to lobby planning ministers privately” and that only representations that are made available to all interested parties can be taken into account.
Sometimes MPs may help constituents articulate their concerns on a planning application, or write to the LPA about an issue. Anyone, including MPs, can also request for a planning application to be called-in by the Secretary of State.
In the planning system, it doesn’t matter who presents an argument—whether it’s an MP or a constituent. At every stage where public input is allowed, all comments are evaluated solely on their merits, regardless of who submits them.
